Heading off to school with braces? Whether you’re just starting your orthodontic journey or already in treatment, having a well-stocked care kit can make all the difference. At Georgia School of Orthodontics, we believe that a little preparation goes a long way in helping our students stay comfortable, confident, and clean throughout the school day.
Here’s exactly what to include in your back-to-school braces survival kit, so you can smile all day long, worry-free.

1. Travel Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Lunch and snacks can leave food particles stuck in brackets and wires. A compact toothbrush and travel-size toothpaste help you clean up quickly and discreetly after meals, keeping your breath fresh and your teeth plaque-free.

Tip: If you can’t brush right away, rinsing your mouth with water or an orthodontic mouthwash can help until you get home.

2. Floss or Interdental Brushes

Flossing with braces can be tricky, but tools like floss threaders and interdental brushes make the job easier and faster. Keeping a few in your kit allows for quick cleaning between classes or right after lunch.

3. Orthodontic Wax

New braces or recent adjustments can sometimes cause irritation inside your cheeks or lips. That’s where orthodontic wax comes in. Just roll a small piece into a ball and press it over the bracket or wire causing discomfort.

4. Lip Balm

Dry or chapped lips are common during braces treatment, especially during the winter. A good lip balm keeps your lips hydrated and reduces irritation caused by brackets or wires rubbing against dry skin. Choose a non-greasy, flavorless version that won’t leave residue on your braces.

5. Compact Mirror

A small mirror is incredibly helpful when checking for food, applying wax, or inspecting for any irritation. Pick one that fits in your kit, or better yet, one with a built-in light for those dimly lit locker rooms or restrooms.

6. Hand Sanitizer or Wipes

You’ll be touching your mouth often, whether it’s to apply wax, remove food, or adjust a rubber band. Having hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes ensures you’re not introducing germs, especially during cold and flu season.

7. Travel-Size Mouth Wash

For a quick refresh after meals or if you can’t brush right away, a travel-size mouth wash is a great addition. Choose an alcohol-free, orthodontist-approved rinse to reduce plaque and freshen up your smile.

8. Extra Rubber Bands

If your treatment includes rubber bands, it’s essential to carry a few spares in your kit. Bands can snap or get lost during the day. It’s important to not skip wearing them to avoid slowing down your treatment progress.

Tip: Keep them in a small container so they don’t get dirty or lost.

9. Zippered Pouch or Cosmetic Bag

Going back to school with braces doesn’t have to be stressful. At Georgia School of Orthodontics, we’re here to help you smile brighter every step of the way—whether in the classroom or the clinic.
