John E. Maupin, Jr., D.D.S., M.S.

Dr. John E. Maupin, Jr. is a distinguished healthcare executive with more than 45 years of leadership experience in academic health sciences, public health, community health, health professions education, and corporate governance. He currently serves as President of the National Dental Association Foundation and Senior Advisor to CINQCARE, Inc., a national healthcare management services organization.

Dr. Maupin served as President of Morehouse School of Medicine for eight years before retiring in 2014. Previously, he served for 12 years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Meharry Medical College, becoming the first alumnus and second dentist to lead the institution. Meharry later named him President Emeritus—the first former president in the College’s history to receive that distinction.

His earlier leadership positions included Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Morehouse School of Medicine; Executive Director of Morehouse Medical Associates; Chief Executive Officer of Southside Healthcare, Inc.; Deputy Commissioner of Health, and Assistant Commissioner for Clinical Services of the Baltimore City Health Department; and Dental Director of the West Baltimore Community Health Center. He also served as a career dental officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1997 as Command Dental Surgeon of the 125th U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Dr. Maupin served as President of the National Dental Association in 1984 and President of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools from 2005 to 2007. He has testified before U.S. Senate and House committees on health professions education, minority health, health disparities, and health equity. He has also served on numerous advisory panels for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Maupin currently chairs the Board of VALIC Company I, a Corebridge Financial-sponsored mutual fund complex. His previous public-company board service includes Enhabit Home Health & Hospice (NYSE: EHAB), Encompass Health (NYSE: EHC), Regions Financial (NYSE: RF), Pinnacle Financial Partners (Nasdaq: PNFP), and Monarch Dental Corporation (formerly Nasdaq: MDDS).

A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Maupin attended San José State University and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in 1972. He completed a general dentistry residency at Provident Hospital in Baltimore and earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Loyola University Maryland.
