The Georgia School of Orthodontics is re-launching its Gift of a Smile program. Past recipients of GSO’s Gift of a Smile, Damian Soler, far left, Savien Cox, second from left, and Sierra Henson, right, stand with Ricky E. Harrell, Program Director at Georgia School of Orthodontics.

Four local children will soon have brighter smiles, thanks to a Gwinnett orthodontic clinic.

Earlier this week, the Georgia School of Orthodontics (GSO) announced that it will provide four Gwinnett and Sandy Springs children with complimentary orthodontic care through its Gift of a Smile program, which is accepting nominations through May 12.

The program, which was established in 2016 to celebrate the grand opening of GSO’s Atlanta clinic — it’s Gwinnett clinic is located in Duluth, while the Atlanta clinic is located in Sandy Springs — has thus far provided free orthodontic care to nine children in the metro area.

GSO has pledged to provide $100,000 in complimentary orthodontic care to children who need braces but cannot otherwise afford it.

“Giving back to our community is the most important mission we have here at the Georgia School of Orthodontics,” said Ricky Harrell, program director at GSO. “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the smile of a child whose life has forever changed from orthodontic treatment.”

Dacula resident Reena Henson, the mother of smile recipient Sierra Henson, said the program has done just that for her family.

“For our family to receive the gift of a smile, it has changed our world,” Henson said. “We had already started the process at GSO for my oldest daughter to receive braces, and shortly into the process we found out my husband had cancer. We did not have insurance, so we had to put braces on the backburner. Then I received an email for the Gift of a Smile contest. We applied and Sierra was selected.”

The relaunch of the Gift of a Smile program marks the celebration of GSO’s three-year anniversary in the metro community.

GSO is partnering with Gwinnett County Public Schools middle schools, as well as Sandy Springs Public Schools, for nominations for this year’s recipients. In addition to the four students who are selected, the schools with the most nominations will receive free school supplies for their classrooms.
