    Course Description

    In this 1 hour webinar, Ricky E. Harrell, DMD, MA and Abtin Shahriari, DMD, MPH will review the current knowledge of COVID-19 and advise owners and administrators how they should handle their daily operations. Further, a review of proper universal precautions in an institutional setting as well as in private practice setting will be reviewed. Finally, owners and administrators will be advised on how to educate employees to reduce uncertainty, mitigate risk and handle patient questions.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Define COVID-19, describe its pathogenicity and present current knowledge about the virus.
    2. Describe the clinical signs and patient-reported symptoms of COVID-19, method of transmission, and reach of virus.
    3. Evaluate and understand the proper precautions that should be taken Institution Practice regarding the COVID-19.
    4. Advise on what to tell managers and employees in Institutional Practice to mitigate fears and concerns and educate them in order to answer patient questions.

    About Ricky E. Harrell, DMD, MA

    Dr. Ricky E. Harrell is a 1979 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. After serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in the Navajo Area Indian Health Service for three years, he returned to the University of Alabama and completed his residency in orthodontics in 1984. He was in the private practice of orthodontics in Westminster, CO from 1984-2006. Upon leaving private practice in 2006, he became a commissioned officer in the US Army Reserves, 919th Medical CO (DS) in Aurora, CO and joined the faculty at the University of Colorado. He earned an MA in education from the University of the Pacific in 2014.Dr. Harrell most recently served as program director and professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina. His clinical teaching interests include temporary anchorage devices, diode laser treatment, the role of extractions in orthodontic treatment, and surgical orthodontics. Dr. Harrell de-commissioned from the US Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel in the medical corps in August 2016 after 10 years of service in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras and two deployments to Camp Bucca, Iraq, and Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan.

    Dr. Harrell is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (1984) and the Southern Association of Orthodontists (2015). He is also a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (2010).

    When out of the office, he enjoys music, fishing, skiing, hiking, yard work, reading, and spending time with his wife, Melanie, and their family.

    About Abtin Shahriari, DMD, MPH

    Dr. Abtin, as his patients know him, is a highly skilled board-certified oral maxillofacial surgeon, having completed a combined eight years of specialty training at some of America’s top institutions, including an Ivy League degree from the University of Pennsylvania and residency training at Emory University, where he was mentored by some of the countries best known surgeons. He has performed thousands of surgeries, from outpatient procedures performing facial and oral implants, facial cosmetics and rejuvenation, corrective jaw surgery, and pathology, to extremely complex facial reconstructions and high-risk trauma cases in the area’s Level 1 trauma centers.

He has been featured in various media such as NBC, the Atlantan, and the Marietta Daily Journal, for his contributions to the medical and dental fields. His achievements are numerous and include publishing in national and international medical journals and textbooks.

    Dr. Abtin is an active philanthropist and often volunteers his skills internationally, performing surgeries treating children with cleft lip and palate through his nonprofit organization Project Global Smile. Project Global Smile (P.G.S) is a mission initiated by Dr. Abtin specifically intended to benefit children in underprivileged regions of the world. Prior to P.G.S, Dr. Abtin volunteered his medical skills in Songea, Tanzania and worked with the CDC on polio eradication in Bihar, India.
